Certified and legally sworn translations
What is a legally sworn translation?
A legally sworn translation, also known as a certified translation and official translation, is a special translation because it is provided to have the same legal bearing as the source document. Sworn translations are carried out by sworn translators. They are responsible for your translation because they put their stamp on your translation as well as on the original document it goes with. Some authorities accept the sworn translation of a document based on a copy, but most only accept translations that are carried out using the originals. Ask the relevant authority for information. The elements that make up the sworn element of the document, i.e. the date, translation number (for its monitoring and traceability), and sworn translator’s signature and stamp, enable the legitimacy and accuracy of your translation and official document to be proven to any French court, institution or administration. The sworn translator is a translator recognised as a ministerial officer and is responsible for the good or bad translation of your document. This expert translator is approved by the Court of Appeal in their region.
The quality and linguistic richness of this type of translation is equivalent to each of our other translations. They also need a translator who is specialised in the relevant field, translating into their mother tongue. Indeed, our translation agency cannot envisage a translator translating a document into a language that is not their mother tongue, a practise that is not in keeping with our service quality philosophy. The translator must completely master the language the original document is in.
The different types of legally sworn translation
Legally sworn translation is reserved for “official” documents, which correspond to all documents relating to the French State and its public administrations. The list of these documents is long and varied but we are most often contacted for sworn translations of driver’s licences, identity papers, diplomas, notarised documents, wills and various deeds and certificates (birth, marriage, death, etc.). In rarer cases, you may also need a sworn translation to present certain non-official documents to a foreign court if you are involved in a lawsuit abroad.
Feel free to contact us to find out if your document needs a ministerial officer (sworn translator) to undertake it for its legitimacy to be proved to an authority.
Why choose our translation agency for your certified and sworn translations?
We have been recognised experts in translation for more than 20 years
Our translation agency was established in 1993. After several years of growth and development, our translation agency works internationally, in particular thanks to our translators who live all over the world and can translate your documents in all languages urgently. This is thanks to time differences, meaning a translator living on another continent can start working on your project immediately, when our French translation offices are closed. You can also drop into one of our agencies in Paris or Marseille to ask for a quotation or ask any questions.
Another aspect our translation offices are known for and recognised around the world is their commitment to quality. Our translators, whether they are in-house or freelance, are selected from among the best and undertake thorough tests. Not only that, we never deliver a translation project before the translator, proofreader and project manager have proofread and checked it. This triple check means there’s almost no possibility of your text having errors. Our company has been awarded two ISO certifications demonstrating its commitment, organisation, and management as well as its translation quality.
